Project
In 2019, a vision emerged to create a Health Centre for the Geraldine Community. The Geraldine Licensing Trust initiated this project by purchasing property and establishing the Geraldine District Foundation to start fundraising. When they applied for funding from the Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury, both organisations realised their shared goals for the community and collaborated, accelerating the development of the proposal.
Being approached for a design and build solution, Thompson embraced the opportunity to be involved in this community project. The scope was to create a modern purpose-built facility for dental and health practitioners to provide their services and supply rooms to be used by community groups.
As a medical care facility, this building was designed and constructed to meet Importance Level 4 of the New Zealand Building Code, ensuring its essential role in post-disaster recovery. The main structure features steel frames and precast tilt panels, topped with a Coloursteel roof, using a proven building methodology. The design, with its two gable ends, blends seamlessly into the surrounding residential area. Inspired by Geraldine’s St Andrews Church, the stonewall columns and wall covers provide a natural and historic aesthetic.
The 730m² interior is divided into three functional areas. The medical rooms, located in the west, include spacious waiting areas, while the triage and dentist rooms are situated in the south. The community and consulting rooms are in the northeast. To enhance the street appeal from Maslin Street, the building features a glazed wind lobby.
Having a medical centre in Geraldine significantly enhances the quality of life for residents. It supports easy access to essential healthcare services, promotes preventive care, and supports overall community well-being. It's a vital asset for the community!
